FAQ
From the user's perspective.
2. What if I am not satisfied with my personal assistant?
Personal assistants sign an employment contract that complies with the law. The probation period lasts three months. During this period, the contract can be terminated without a specific reason. After the probation period ends, the contract can only be terminated if the assistant seriously violates its terms.
3. Does a personal assistant have to travel with me?
This should be agreed upon in advance between the user and the assistant. You cannot force your assistant to travel. However, if the assistant agrees to go, all travel-related expenses (accommodation, per diem) must be covered by the user. Also, during the trip, the assistant is expected to work according to the conditions stated in their employment contract.
4. Does the assistant clean my living space?
Yes, but not to the extent that personal assistance becomes limited to household chores only. Personal assistance should include a variety of tasks and activities.
5. Does the assistant cook lunch?
A personal assistant can assist the user with lunch preparation — meaning they follow the user's instructions precisely. For example, the assistant should not cook lunch while the user is asleep in another room.
Kitchen tasks can be part of personal assistance, but they should never become the assistant's main responsibility.
6. Does the personal assistant provide personal hygiene and care?
A personal assistant supports the user in maintaining personal hygiene. However, assistance should not be reduced to providing care only.
The user is also responsible for providing equipment that makes the assistant's work easier — such as a lift, transfer board, adjustable bed — as well as necessary supplies like gloves and protective masks.
According to the Labour Act, the employer (in this case, the user) must provide lifting aids for any load over 25 kg.
7. Does the assistant have to or can they drive me by car?
If the assistant has a valid driver's license, they can (but are not required to) drive the user by car. However, the car should never be the assistant's personal vehicle — it should be owned by the user.
Also, the user assumes responsibility for any damage to the vehicle, regardless of whether the assistant was at fault. It is recommended that the car has comprehensive insurance (kasko). Of course, the driver is always legally responsible for traffic liability.
8. Is the service free of charge for me?
The Commission for Determining the Need for Personal Assistance decides, based on your income level, whether you need to co-finance the service. Co-financing amounts to 1% or 2% of the service cost, depending on your income.
9. I am employed. Do I have the right to a personal assistant?
Yes. Your employment status does not affect the approval of personal assistance services.
From the personal assistant's perspective.
1. What are the requirements to become a personal assistant?
A personal assistant must be medically and psychophysically fit to perform personal assistance tasks for a person with a disability. This is confirmed by a family doctor or occupational medicine specialist.
A personal assistant must have no criminal record and no ongoing criminal proceedings against them. A certificate of no criminal record is issued by the court.
The personal assistant must have completed either secondary school or primary school plus a caregiver course. Proof of this is a copy of the relevant certificate.
The official answer to this question can be found in Article 18 of the Personal Assistance Act, available [HERE].
Personal assistant training is conducted by HUPT Zagreb and financed by the Croatian Employment Service through the Voucher system. Therefore, the training is free for the participant and is conducted online. You can get more information on this topic HERE.
2. How much is my salary?
Each service provider sets the salary of personal assistants independently. AsistentOS pays assistants €500.00 BRUTO 1 for half-time work and €1,000.00 BRUTO 1 for full-time work.
The NET salary depends on the employee's personal tax deductions.
3. Do I receive any material benefits in addition to my salary?
AsistentOS pays employees working full-time a meal allowance of €100.00. Employees working half-time are not entitled to a meal allowance.
All employees receive Christmas bonuses, Easter bonuses, and vacation allowances according to company possibilities. Employees working half-time receive 50% of the material benefits granted to full-time employees.
4. Do I have the right to transportation allowance?
All employees at AsistentOS are entitled to full reimbursement of transportation costs for commuting to and from work, up to the amount of a monthly public transport ticket.
5. Can I take sick leave?
Of course. Personal assistants can take sick leave when needed. They receive compensation according to the regulations that apply to all employees. After 42 days of sick leave, the responsibility for payment shifts to the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (HZZO). The sick pay amounts to 70% of the regular salary.
6. Am I required to follow orders from the user's household members?
No. A personal assistant follows instructions exclusively from the user. The only exception is when the user, due to the type of disability, cannot communicate. In that case, one household member is designated to give instructions to the personal assistant.
7. Do I work when the user is in the hospital or undergoing rehabilitation?
No. A personal assistant follows instructions exclusively from the user. The only exception is when the user, due to the type of disability, cannot communicate. In that case, one household member is designated to give instructions to the personal assistant.
8. What if the user does not behave according to the ethical code?
The user must treat the personal assistant politely, respectfully, and courteously. If the user is dissatisfied with the assistant's work, the issue should be addressed privately, without the presence of others (e.g., ask the assistant aside).
The user has no right to demand tasks from the assistant that violate safety or moral principles. However, a personal assistant should NEVER leave the user unprotected or unattended. For example, if the user insults or abuses you, it is your duty to call family members, neighbors, or even the police, explain the situation, and only then leave the user.
9. How do I resolve a problem or misunderstanding with the user?
Before signing the employment contract, AsistentOS conducts an internal mini-training during which the assistant and user get to know each other and determine if the basic conditions for their cooperation are met.
If misunderstandings or disagreements arise, we recommend that both the user and assistant address the issues as soon as possible, without letting problems accumulate. If they cannot resolve the issue themselves, they should promptly contact the personal assistance service manager. We will help mediate.
